 All Branch Sere instructor
« Result #1 on Nov 20, 2009, 2:44pm »

is it true that SERE instructors from ALL U.S. Military branches go through the USAF SERE program to be eligible to instruct?

I can't get a straight answer from recruiter and am attempting to become a SF Sere instructor

For the PSK, the cadre assigned to your element would ultimately have the decision. If you can sell it well enough, they'll usually let you take it provided its not food or other contraband. My PSK regularly contained chew...to be used in case of a stomach issue of course.

They allow lighters during field training?

I'm in the same boat as you ladies! My husband is leaving in January for Basic Training and then will be going to the July Tech School. I've been trying so hard to find out any information I can.
So, after reading everyones posts, my question is, after the two week Indoc course after basic training, will the Air Force pay to move me up their with my husband? I want to go and support him because I know making SERE is his dream.
And if they will pay for the move, will it be while he is inbetween basic and tech or after he starts tech school?

: ) thanks for the help.

They will issue you everything that you need, so don't stress about it too much. A better idea would be to think about and make a list of things you would like in a survival kit. Do this out at field, as field will highlight this type of stuff.

Just my 2 cents here but I wouldn't get all wrapped around the axel about the PSK thing. The biggest and best PSK you can have is the one you have between your ears - if you have properly trained and are mentally ready - then you will do just fine. It's been a while since I went through...March of 1995 to be exact, and if I remember right when it was all said and done - we were pretty much limited to band aids, duct tape, gum and a few other things but I can't remember anymore. I know we weren't allowed to take medication to include motrin/ tylenol/ vivarin, alcohol (no-brainer), extra food, etc. Motrin and tylenol type products mask dehydration symptoms. I do remember my class didn't take much - at the end of the day it is just extra weight to carry around. Maybe a more recent graduate can provide you with more specifics. Whatever you are allowed to take will be visually checked by Cadre before you go to the field. Either way - good luck and like I said - if you've prepared yourself for training then you will do just fine - with or without a PSK.

 Depth Perception?
« Result #9 on Nov 9, 2009, 2:18pm »

before i start thank you to all who reply!

I've been looking to get into the military and have been to MEPS twice for the navy trying to get into the search and rescue program. But since I havnt passed the PST i cant get a contract so I was going to pick a rate i liked and was told that I would have till the 5th week in boot to pass the PST and i would be able to crossrate. Unfortunately the second time i went, and in don't know why they didn't test me the first time knowing i wanted to go search and rescue, i took and failed the depth perception test which is beyond me! I was just wondering the vision requirements and if I did decide to join the AF if i would be able to qualify for SERE. I have passed the ASVAB with a 71 and everything medical wise is perfect.

 personal survival kit
« Result #10 on Nov 8, 2009, 10:52pm »

i am an aspiring sere specialist who is going to be going through selection in jan. i was looking through the packing list and noticed that you were allowed a personal survival kit providing you get it approved by the cadre and i'm hoping someone here can shed some light on that topic for me. such as when, where and how you get it approved? Is there a size limit or recommendation? What are some prohibited items? Encouraged items? Hints, tips, tricks, and other recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
