I am an OLD SERE specialist. Actually got my start with the 1st Air Commando Gp at the Jungle School on Albrook AFB, Canal Zone in 1961-62. Graduated and taught at Stead AFB field instr, and then to FAFB, field instr and resistance interrogator, from there to Clark AFB, PI, in country trips to teach, fly missions and evaluate training, from there to Tyndall AFB where I became the HALO instructor since there was no HALO school. Army Golden Knights gave me my training and my graduation was to jump with them in a show at Ft. Rucker, Ala. In school we used the MC-1 but in the show I used a ParaCommander (looks like a ParaSail). When TAFB school closed I went to Homestead AFB where I retired in 1976. Went through the Alaska school while at TAFB.

My son just passed his PAST and is in delayed entry waiting for his ship out date. His recruiter told him it could be several months. However, the next class is January 6th, which means considering basic training, the 10 day indoctrinate class, he would need to ship out by October 15 give or take. Does anyone know how many people are in the January 2011 class? he is hard core dedicated, intelligent, athletic and all around top notch I am sure will be successful. he also passed up on a college football scholarship in order to be a Sere Specialists, I really hate watching him wait it out like this with so much uncertainty from his recruiter who says the job has to open up. can someone offer some guidance or thoughts?

Anyone who has ever considered working for the Saudi Air Force at the SERE Center… be aware that contracts have dwindled each ‘roll-over’ period to a now unacceptable level for new hires. Contract salary offers are 40% lower, single employees must room together 2 to 1 villa, travel pay is gone, bonuses are not offered, overtime while engaged in the desert exercise has been eliminated, and shipping of household goods has been eliminated. Essentially, as a new hire, you can do better in the USA than in KSA. Existing employees will retain most of the benefits for another 3 years before we are affected. The “fun bucket” is almost empty! Foreign Military Sales Contracts (FMS) have given way to Direct Saudi Commercial Contracts (DCC) and they are pretty slim. FMS contracts have U.S. gov’t guarantees… DCC contracts have no assurances. Beware… even if you are not applying for work at the SERE Center… this applies across the board. If coming to Saudi make sure you sign an FMS contract. This was a Great ride!
