I was told a few months ago by a member of this site "There are plenty of spots for sere as long as your recruter is helping you out". I was just informed by my recruiter that there are no slots and there haven't been any for some time. Does anybody know whether or not this is true?
I took the PAST test and met the requirements and got an 81 on the ASVAB. My recruiter is suggesting I go CCT but I don't want to give up on SERE; at the same time I don't want to have to wait a year for a slot to open up. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I am pretty curious about the same thing actually. My recruiter mentioned I should go after SERE but never mentioned slots or availability to me.

For me it took exactly 5 months to get a SERE contract from the day I swore in and another 4 before I ship out. So I will be in DEP for a total of 9 months until I leave for basic in May.
They don't hand out SERE contracts very often probably because they only have 2 techschools a year. Thats my guess anyway.
My recruiter insisted I go CCT or PJ too. I told her I wanted something highspeed without having to kill people and made it clear I wanted a SERE contract. You have to be clear with your recruiter and persistant. It should not take you a year to receive a SERE contract. It will however take you 3 to 4 months after you sign your contract to leave for basic.
For some reason mine took longer but I've heard people getting them a month or two after they swear in. Bottem line is if you really want it just wait for it. Don't get pushed into something you don't want. Remember, the recruiter works for you not the other way around.

I actually swore into the DEP back in November, and was just assigned my SERE slot a couple of weeks ago, so I only had to wait a couple of months. From what I understand slots open up periodically as people drop out of the program, so if you really want it don't let a recruiter sway your opinion. My advice would be to spend as much time making yourself as appealing as possible so they couldn't possibly pass up your application.

I just spoke with my recruiters boss today and that's almost the exact time-frame she gave me (5-6 months for contract/4-6 months to ship). Thanks for the info guys and good luck with Tech School.

Yeah, I really want SERE and my recruiter(s) are really trying to get me to do CCT or PJ as well. Thanks for the information though, I was a bit nervous I would have to wait well over a year for a spot. I hope that's not the case, I'm ready to get my butt in gear!

Just my info:
I swore in in November and got a SERE contract 2-3 weeks later. However, I had an E-7 helping me out the whole time, which might have helped. /Shrug

I was told by my recruiter there are 12 people on a waiting list for SERE slots, and they wouldn't even let me try the PAST because of this. Disgruntled, oh yeah!

If you want it then wait for no matter what your recruiter says. I know this waiting sucks but I'm going to use it as part of motivation down at selection. I waited to long to get a contract definitely not going to throw it away.

Recruiters are usually full of crap and will tell you whatever to try and get you into a job they want you to have. As a SERE Specialist, I can tell you that there are slots but you may have to wait for them. Our tech school only does 2 classes a year because it is a 6 month course. The reason that you have to wait so long for a slot is also becuase alot of the people that try out for SERE dont make it. This is usually cause they quit when things get tough or because they are out of shape and their recruiters lied about there past test to try and get them in. Stay on your recruiter about it and dont give up on it. It is worth the wait.

Hey so I'm new the boards. I swore into the AF this past August and passed my PAST test like 2 weeks ago. My recruiter told me that since the new jobs just came out I have a good shot at getting one and he told me to shoot for leaving for basic in March, so I could make the summer session of school. Is their any truth to this? They way this thread is making it sound is that I should be shooting for a slot next winter. Any advice/input would be greatly appreciate.

I am new to posting to the boards here, but I have browsed for several months.
I initially signed up for the Air Force back in June 2010 under a Open Mechanical contract. I took my PAST test a few months later and signed my new contract for SERE at the beginning of January, which is when I also got my leave date for BMT (31 May 2010). As you can see, I waited nearly a year for SERE. If your heart is set on it, you will wait.
