lots of lower back exercises like kettlebell swings, deadlift, good morning, back extensions... also shoulder exercises like shrugs and lateral raises will strengthen your aching shoulder muscles that fatigue through long distance rucking. lastly, what ruck are you using? if you can try to carry it high and set weight in the center of the pack not all in the bottom so that it makes it less awkward to carry... other than that muscles strengthen and adjust or you just learn to live with the pain either way going for SERE is worth it. Best of luck...

If you plan on just training with it I would by an alice pack. I am not sure what they are using down there at selection now but I would imagine it would be very simmilar. If you are looking for something better to use backpacking there are a lot of options. Civilian companies make some great packs, like Gregory, Kelty, arc terex. Military packs my favorite is a company called Eberlystock. They have some d**n good hunting packs as well as tacticle packs.

I just finished selection a couple of weeks ago, and they are using the alice pack. i would recommend going to a war surplus store and buying one. They are definitely different than just wearing a backpack. if you try and put too much weight in a pack without a frame you will wind up hating yourself. As for the cost, it kind of goes by the condition the pack is in. i saw some for around $70 to $100 that were in pretty decent condition, so just shop around a little and you should be good. But good call on practicing rucking. That's what knocked out more than half my class during selection.
